How can I build healthy food habits?
If you're looking to build healthier food habits, the goal isn't perfection, it's small, consistent steps that feel realistic and enjoyable.
Enjoyable being the key.
Here are a few practical steps you can take using starting from this week.
So one, make the changes enjoyable.
Food shouldn't feel like a chore, it's one of life's simple pleasures, so you may like to try a new recipe, explore world cuisines, or change how you cook a favourite meal.
Just aim for enjoyment and nourishment.
two eat mindfully.
When you can eat without your phone or the TV on.
Notice the colours, smells and textures of the food, and slowly chew.
Eating more slowly also gives your body time to register fullness.
three, find balance.
Try not to label foods as good or bad.
All foods have a place in a diet, whether it's something sweet that lifts your mood or a nourishing soup that feels like a real vitamin boost.
Removing stigma helps to reduce guilt and that all or nothing thinking.
Pick one or two recipes you like to try, write a quick shopping list and make sure you've got the basics in.
So keep a few quick nourishing snacks at home so you're less likely to grab something that leaves you feeling flat and has no nutritional value, or being tempted to order a takeaway just because you're hungry and rushed.
6.
Stop check and add in an add-in mindset.
Once a week, take five minutes to see what you've got and what you need.
And instead of focusing on what to cut down on, ask what can I add to my fridge or my cupboards that I enjoy and that supports my health?
That's often where motivation starts from.
Finally remember, good habits are built through consistency, gradual change and self-compassion.
If you notice you're being hard on yourself for indulging, just pause and enjoy the treat mindfully and then return to your next healthy choice.
So thanks for listening, and I hope the tips I've provided you with today are a good starting point so you can introduce some healthier eating habits.
And these habits are for your health and your mental well being, and they will become your new normal.
So do look after yourself and thank you for listening.
