What role does culture play in my well-being?
Culture is the shared way of life of a group of people.
It isn't just tied to nationality or ethnicity.
You can belong to multiple cultures at once.
Family culture, workplace culture, community culture or even online culture.
Wellbeing is your overall state of being well, not just physically but emotionally, mentally and socially too.
It is about how you feel in yourself and how your life is going.
Culture plays a big role in your well being.
It shapes how you see yourself, how you cope with others, and how you cope with stress.
Culture gives you a sense of identity and belonging.
The traditions, values, beliefs, language and stories you grew up with answer questions like who am I and where do I fit in?
The sense of belonging is strongly linked to emotional well-being.
When you feel connected to that, it can create stability and self-worth.
Culture influences how you understand and express emotions.
Some cultures encourage open expression of feelings, while others value privacy.
Neither one is wrong or right, but if your environment clashes with your cultural norms, it can create internal tension or make you feel misunderstood.
Culture shapes your coping mechanisms too.
This could be through spiritual practices, family support systems, storytelling, food, music or rituals.
Even small things like cooking familiar meals or hearing music from your background can create comfort and stability, especially during stress.
If you are thinking of harming yourself or feel unsafe, please call your local emergency number or crisis line.
