What steps should I take after being diagnosed with cancer?

There are some really important steps to help you to cope with the initial shock of a cancer diagnosis and after that practical emotional support that will be important.

So number one, first step, it's really important that you understand every aspect of your diagnosis so you can care for yourself in the best possible way.

Start to adapt emotionally and mentally to what is going on for you physically.

Ask questions such as location and growth rate.

You can then go on to make informed decisions about treatments available.

If you're unsure or doubt the diagnosis, do not be afraid to ask for a second opinion.

two, explore treatment options with your healthcare team.

It is important to know any possible side effects and how these will affect your life.

Some of the treatments will be to explore chemotherapy, radiotherapy, radiation, and sometimes clinical trials can offer access to new treatments that are not yet widely available, especially if you've already tried other treatments.

Number three, build your support network.

Learn how to ask for help and support from friends and family.

And if you're someone that's used to doing everything on your own and you're very independent, this can be difficult.

But asking for help can make a huge difference for your emotional and mental well-being.

Remember, your journey is unique, and sometimes listening to others in a group can make you feel worse.

So really monitor how you feel in these groups.

Number four, your treatment plan will be the main focus for you.

So it's important to stay organized.

Keep your medical appointments in a diary and then a folder with all of your medical records and treatment plans together.

Remember, in between medical appointments, if you have any questions that come up to write them down so you can ask at your next appointment.

And use pillboxes for medication, maybe sitting down once a week to fill them according to instructions.

So you can forget this task, it's done.

Number five, take care of your emotional well-being, which in my opinion is the most important.

Without this, it's hard to stay focused on your steps and practical things you need to do to stay well.

You have to continue to live your life.

So I'd encourage you to look out for a counsellor who is specialized in working with cancer patients.

They can help you navigate emotional challenges that come with cancer care, and they will probably be signposted to you by the medical team.

Number six, last one.

It's really important to continue finding joy in things, even the smallest things, which will help you to manage stress and take your mind away from fear and worry.

Mindset is everything when going through treatment.

How we think affects how we feel.

So consider taking on new hobbies.

Creative pursuits, or try meditation, yoga, or anything that takes your mind, gives you an off of things, and gives you an escape.

If you need further information after a cancer diagnosis, some good organisations on the internet are Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.

Do not hesitate to call NHS 111 option 2 if you are emotionally struggling.

So this cuts out the need to make another medical appointment with your GP because your diary is going to be no doubt have a few in there already.

So do not hesitate to reach out.

Take care.
