How can I explore and connect with my cultural roots? Emotional Wellbeing | Cultural Identity Counsellor: Susan Published: 8 May 2026 How can I explore and connect with my cultural roots? Exploring and connecting with your cultural roots is less about finding one correct version of yourself and more about building a relationship with where you come from at your own pace and in a way that feels meaningful to you. A good place to start is with your own story. Think about what you already know, family traditions, foods, languages, values, or even small habits that might have cultural origins. If it feels comfortable talking to relatives, this can open up a lot, asking about their childhood, migration stories, celebrations or beliefs. You can also explore through everyday experiences. Food is often the easiest way. Cooking, traditional dishes or learning the stories behind them can make culture feel tangible. Music, films, books and art from your background can also help you to connect emotionally, not just intellectually. Another layer to exploring is learning the history and context. Understanding where your culture fits in a wider social or historical picture can deepen your sense of connection. This might include reading, watching documentaries or exploring how your culture has evolved over time. Community can make a big difference too, so attending cultural events, joining local groups or even finding online spaces where people share similar backgrounds. It is worth being honest about mixed feelings. Not everyone feels connected to their roots immediately, and sometimes there can be distance, conflict or even discomfort. That doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. Exploring culture can include questioning, reshaping, or deciding what part feels right for you. If you are thinking of harming yourself or feel unsafe, please call your local emergency number or crisis line.
